Moxa | Cybersecurity for Smart Manufacturing

12/17/2018

Picture
Traditional factories have long been an information silo with fewer cybersecurity concerns than enterprise networks, which typically have numerous external access points. Nowadays, smart factories involve mass-customization and cloud services, which requires IT and OT to be integrated by connections to sensors, machines, and production lines. Through technology, smart factories can consolidate data, making the ICS (Industrial Control System) network in these factories more vulnerable to the external and internal threats such as hacking, malicious attacks, or even malpractice by employees.
To address these issues, the top priority when enabling cybersecurity is to allow only necessary traffic on mission-critical networks. In other words, you need to create a “clean” network environment to protect smart machines, production lines and ultimately your entire factory. This level of protection is achieved with industrial firewalls and other industrial networking devices that comply with the IEC 62443 industrial security standard. IEC 62443 defines guidelines for different parts of a network and those who perform different responsibilities on the network.

Moxa | SDS-3008 Smart Switch

4/30/2018

Picture
Picture
For machine builders and automation engineers, being able to monitor their Ethernet switches from a SCADA/HMI gives them a great overall view of their control systems, and the ability to react in time to minimize system downtime. In addition, the most common concern related to deploying managed switches is operational complexity, including both setup and subsequent management. Moxa’s super-slim SDS-3008 smart switch is designed to meet these challenges. With its simplified protocol configuration, flexible mounting design, easy-to-use interface, and slim form factor, the SDS-3008 smart switch is the perfect fit for control cabinets in any smart manufacturing application.

Common Challenges for Ethernet Switch Deployment

Picture

Cost Issue

For applications that require only basic monitoring and control functions, it’s not economical for engineers to choose expensive managed switches, which often support too many unneeded functions.

Space Limitations

Engineers work with different types of control cabinets, and each one has space or installation limitations.

Complex Configuration

IT-oriented user interfaces, which are often very complicated and come with a steep learning curve for IA engineers, make it harder to update configurations and handle basic troubleshooting tasks.
