Ever since crude oil began to replace coal, the world economy has been related to its supply and demand. This sticky black substance provides power for transportation and its refinements are inextricably bound to our daily lives. They can be seen everywhere from packaging materials, medicine capsules, clothes made of synthetic fiber, construction materials, machinery and equipment parts, and so on. However, oil is hard to obtain. The geological assessment, exploration drilling, and official exploitation not only needs a substantial amount of money, but also a large number of human and material resources and precise assessment to find the seams.

In order to get correct and useful mining information, mudlogger (also known as mud logging) connects to a variety of sensors of drilling equipment, and through these sensors large amounts of data is acquired and analyzed accurately. With this demand, coupled with relatively harsh operating environment for oil and gas drilling, an oil and gas developer in mainland China chose Advantech’s rugged industrial equipment to closely monitor and acquire this detailed information.

As the system records and controls above 30 sets of parameters, the computer requires a high computing performance. Moreover, the operating equipment installed in an oil well should be able to withstand the strong electromagnetic interference, noise, vibration, and even unstable electricity supply and other harsh conditions. Therefore, Advantech offered the IPPC-9151G all-in-one industrial panel PC. With its wide operating temperature and humidity range, rugged features and Pentium 4 processor, it provides excellent performance and meets the demands of the customer. In addition, the mudlogger system also employs a distributed control architecture. Therefore, it adopted Advantech’s EKI-2528 Ethernet switch for uploading up a dozen kinds of data on an onsite PLC through a PPC-9151G to the workstation.

Advantech indicated that with China's economic growth and surging oil and gas demand as the catalysts the oil and gas well industry has been developing rapidly. Advantech high-performance and rugged solutions not only improve monitoring efficiency but also reduce maintenance difficulty, and oil and gas well management becomes more efficient with less time and effort.
